The honest case for portable
A good portable generator costs a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars, and for short outages it works fine. Power's out for four hours? Drag it out, start it up, run the fridge and a few lights on extension cords, done. If your outages are rare and short, a portable plus a manual transfer switch is a legitimate, budget-friendly setup.
Where portables fall apart
You're the automation. Somebody has to be home to start it, refuel it every 6–10 hours, and shut it down. Outage while you're at work? At the hospital? On vacation? The portable sits silent in the garage. Fuel logistics. Gasoline goes bad in months, so you can't store much — and during a regional outage, gas stations lose power too. Weather. Portables must run outside (carbon monoxide kills), which means you're refueling in the rain at 2am. Capacity. Most portables can't run a central AC, a well pump, and the rest of the house at once.
What standby buys you
Automation. It starts itself in seconds, runs as long as it has fuel (natural gas is effectively unlimited; propane lasts days), and shuts down when power returns. Nobody needs to be home. Capacity. Sized to your home — AC, well pump, everything. Safety. Permanently installed, properly ventilated, no extension cords through windows, no gasoline storage. Clean power. Safe for electronics and medical equipment.
The math that matters
Don't compare purchase prices — compare them against your outage reality. If Charles County's storm pattern gives you a multi-day outage every couple of years, add up: spoiled food, a hotel (or a miserable hot night), lost work, a flooded basement from a dead sump pump, frozen pipes in a winter outage. One bad outage can cost more than the price difference. And unlike the portable, the standby adds to your home's value.
The middle ground
Not ready for a full standby? A portable generator with a professionally installed manual transfer switch is the smart interim step — safe, code-compliant, and far better than extension cords. When you're ready to upgrade, the transfer switch wiring is already partway there. Send the form and we'll talk through what fits your situation.
